The narrator and the speaker’s have attitudes and realizations of someone that they were losing. The poem is called “High School Senior” that is written by Sharon Olds. The short story is called “And Summer Is Gone” that is written by Susie Kretschmer. They both have similarity and different.
The poem is called “High Scholl Senior” is expresses that people who losing some one that is mother. It main idea is expression of the mother of love. The poetry use free verse to write this poem. “For seventeen years, her breath in the house.” The sentence expresses that before the speaker grow up her mother stay with her. “depth of feeling, without her creek-brown hair, her daedal hands with their tapered fingers, her pupils dark as the mourning cloak’s wing, but I can’t.” the sentenced express that the speaker would like to leave her mother and have freedom like a butterfly. She can not make it come true and she can not live without her mother. She knows how is she need her mother stay with her. “My daughter is free and she is in Me.” The sentence express that the speaker grow up and to be a mother have a daughter. She started to understand her mother. Her understand that the love of mother.
The short story is called “And Summer Is Gone” is expresses that the character in the story lose a best friend. People can be influenced by the environment. David is the main character in the story and he would like to keep the memory from his childhood. He did not want to anything change when his friends grow up. “Her body changed, she herself changed” the sentence express that people can be changed. It can not control by self. No matter, how precious for friend relationship. “for I have kept who I am , and it is what I will always be, and Amy is gone.” The sentence express that narrator would like to continue his life and he receive this situation even he is get hurt and lose his friend.
The speaker of the poem, she is losing her mother and get a daughter is a process for the speaker. When the speaker is a child that she can not understand her mother, but she can not live without her mother. When she losing her mother, she understand why her mother do the things before. She did not want to understand her mother until she is losing her mother. the narrator of the short story, he would like to have friend relationship with he friend, but finally, he found that he cannot keep it. People can be influenced by the environment. He decided that continue to do himself. The poem and short story that they both losing someone. One is losing mother, but she can be understand and feel happiness for her life. The other one is losing a best friend. He did not want to losing his friend, but he cannot control the situation. He need to face it. It is cruel for him.
